He sees the way Will teethers on the edge of a choice, and his hopes raises. 

It's a betrayal still, but. Maybe there's something that can be salvaged.

Maybe the shattered teacup can be brought together again. 

"Feed your dogs, leave a note for Alana, and never see her or Jack again."  

But Will denies him, keeps denying him - their fate is decided then. 

And yet later, as he plunges the linoleum knife into Will's abdomen, he wonders  - why does his heart cry?
